GOPAC-UNITAR Anti-Corruption and Human Rights Workshop: Training for Parliamentarians

On February 14, 2024, the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) opened a workshop titled “Anti-Corruption and Human Rights: Training for Parliamentarians”. The workshop brought together experts and parliamentarians to discuss strategies and actionable insights. The workshop covered important topics such as understanding the relationship between corruption and human rights, recognizing the responsibility of parliamentarians in preventing corruption, and dispelling myths surrounding corruption and its impact on society.

H.E. Mr. Nasser bin Mutrif Al-Humaidi, Member of the Shura Council and President of the National Branch of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption – Qatar delivered a speech welcoming participants from more than 20 countries, stressing the causal relationship between preserving human rights and fighting corruption at local, regional and international levels.

During the workshop, Ms. Annalucia Giacomi, Senior Project Leader and human rights expert from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) emphasized that corruption requires global recognition, as it is a transnational crime. She spoke about the negative impact of corruption on health and education and its contribution to increased poverty and migration. Dr. Alex Mejia, Director of People and Social Inclusion from UNITAR, addressed the alarming rise of human trafficking and urged government action to protect human rights as outlined in UN declarations.

Dr. Carlos Lopez, Legal Advisor from the International Commission of Jurists, spoke about the UPR process, government executives, and parliaments implementing the UN Convention against Corruption.
