GOPAC Chair calls for a more open membership: Executive Committee Meeting 25 May 2022

Doha, Qatar – On Wednesday, 25 May 2022, GOPAC Executive Committee held an in-person and online meeting in Doha, Qatar. The meeting was attended by GOPAC Chair H.E. Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al-Marri (Qatar), GOPAC Vice-Chair Hon. Dr. Fadli Zon (Indonesia), GOPAC Vice-Chair Dr. Carlos Alberto Perez Cuevas (Mexico), GOPAC Member-at-Large Dr. Naser Al-Sane (Kuwait), GOPAC Member-at-Large Mr. Jagannath Khatiwada (Nepal). GOPAC Secretary Mr. John Hyde (Australia) and GOPAC Treasurer Mrs. Mary King (Trinidad & Tobago) also attended the meeting virtually. The meeting discussed GOPAC’s governance issues, reviewed membership and observer applications, and strategized organization’s future programs and activities.

The Executive Committee is the administrative organ of GOPAC that responsible for all matters pertaining to the organization, except where a responsibility or task has been expressly vested in another organ.

GOPAC Chair H.E. Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri calls for a more open membership and open GOPAC’s door in such a way to allow all of those who have concerns about anti-corruption to join the organization through member and observer affiliation, and partnership.

The meeting was concluded by the appointment of the new GOPAC Executive Director Mr. Firas Ahmed. Mr. Ahmed was the Director of the International Cooperation Department Public Prosecution of the State of Qatar. His international exposure and fluency in English, Arabic, and Spanish are asset for GOPAC.

GOPAC will continue to promote and raise the awareness of parliaments and parliamentarians’ role in the fight against corruption. GOPAC is also ready to cooperate with parliaments, governments, civil society, international organizations, and other related stakeholders to assist and support parliamentarians in their advocacy and legislation to make governments accountable and transparent.
